I don't have a bias light setup, as my setup is in a very small room with things directly beside the monitor and black foam sound padding on the wall above the display. Using my camera as a light-meter, I find that the average brightness of my walls is between 10-20% the brightness of the monitor at 100% white from the viewing position, so I think that means that ambient light levels are reasonable. Various sources online suggest 80-120 nits and one article on nofilmschool ( link) says the SMPTE standard suggests 35 ft-L which is 120 cd/m2.

I have just recently bought the "Color Correction Handbook : Professional Techniques for Video and Cinema" and was planning on studying that to optimise my setup.Īre there any guidelines for the CRI of the ambient lighting, in addition to its quantity? I currently have some cheap LED lights setup as up-lights so they're diffused from the ceiling, but I suspect the CRI will probably be low. I have been tweaking my office setup for some time now and haven't been happy with the quality and quantity of ambient light, and just recently have reduced it and the comfort level is increased but it's not a scientific approach. Thanks also for the setup instructions, those are very useful and I'll study them when the X-Rite arrives. I've just ordered an X-Rite i1Display Pro and am encouraged it gets your GUI pretty close to your Flanders.

The world of gamma tags, online and uncalibrated displays is unfortunately rather frustrating but getting things looking close on a Mac is doable. VLC and Firefox will be incorrect (too contrasty, because they are not colour managed so won’t read your 1-1-1 tags and will instead use 1-2-1) and PC’s / androids may well be off too. You should find that On a MacBook Pro Using the default display profile and on an iPhone Vimeo/YouTube via chrome and safari and QuickTime will look perceptually very similar to a calibrated display. If the work is going online and you want QuickTime and YouTube / Vimeo to match Resolve then when you export use a cst node and set output gamma to 709A, set the node key to 0.75 (75% of the effect), then in deliver page set gamma tag to 709A (1-1-1). Then grade in a darkened but not pitch black environment.

In the xrite software choose advanced workflows, rec709, then set to 100nits and gamma 2.4.

I find an i1 display pro using xrite software gets my GUI monitor pretty close to my Flanders broadcast monitor. Should I even bother with a wider colour space, or just go for rec709? I publish to YT and who knows what devices my friends and family watch my videos on!

When I got the Dell panel, it was advertised as being capable of wider colour spaces, but I could never get the Spyder to work when I put the monitor into those modes and told the Spyder software that it was a wider colour space monitor.

The Dell claims to support the X-Rite i1Display Pro colorimeter so should I go with that? It's one of the cheapest ones online, and the other is from Datacolor, which I now have a mild grudge against. I don't need it to be super accurate as I'm a hobbyist doing personal projects but I'd like to get something not too far wrong. I use Resolve, and grade using the OSX UI on my Dell UP3216Q monitor, and the MBP monitor when I'm travelling. I just upgraded my MacBook, which means I got a new version of OSX, and just discovered my Datacolor Spyder4 is no longer supported. I searched for a 'recommendations' thread, but couldn't find one - so apologies if I missed it.
